- (the) Mirror
-
one of Britain’s national daily newspapers, formerly called the ↑Daily Mirror. It was started in 1903 by Alfred ↑Harmsworth, who later became Lord Northcliffe, as a newspaper for women. At first it was not a success, but it became very successful when it was made the world’s first daily newspaper with pictures. It suffered badly after being bought in 1984 by Robert Maxwell. It presents political views that are generally left-wing. The paper has a ↑tabloid format (= size of page), and is considered to be part of the ‘popular press’, not one of the ‘quality papers’.See also ↑Sunday Mirror
